FESTIVAL FOR FAMILY

A LAND CALLED FABULOUS by Kristine Tauch

Kai, a boisterous young boar, struggles with proclamations of destiny as his sister, Esmeralda, becomes stained with a mysterious affliction. Learning of a fertile land called Fabulous, Kai sets off on a long journey to find a cure for his sister and save his people from pollution at the hands of Greedy, an industrialist bent on contaminating the land. Along the way, he receives advice from Lamo, the tortoise, who also is heading to Fabulous, before joining forces with Enrico, a gypsy mouse, looking to help his starving family. With help from Keira, the squirrel, they reach Fabulous, only to find it isn't quite in the state they hoped, leading them to enlist the aid of Professor Flake. Greedy mobilizes his plan whilst the gang try to restore Fabulous, only to have them band together and show Greedy the error of his ways. With the fertile land now restored, the animals and friends find the paradise they were all searching for, and Kai emerges as a hero.

A Land Called Fabulous is an endearing adventure story that is elevated by its strong central message of environmental protection and the power of community. The dangers of industrialization and corporate greed are well personified in the antagonistic forces within the script, whilst also providing a clear goal for Kai and his band of allies. The numerous locales and characters Kai comes across on his journey allow for a balanced look at the issue, and how the destruction of nature affects different sub cultures in different ways. Nevertheless, despite the ever-present nature of the global themes, the film doesn't neglect its sense of fun and excitement, with some exciting sequences and memorable characters (Enrico in particular tends to steal the show) that overall make for an enjoyable read.

GENRE: animated/comedy/social problem

LOGLINE: Set in the world of talking little farm animals, a group of little guys try to save their farm land and forests from human destruction.

SHORT FEEDBACK: Really entertaining entrance into the world with Pastor Drake marrying the boar and the sow. The quick montage of seasons to them having kids; Esmerelda and Kai, works well and kicks the main characters off. The bullets hissing past them was a good intro to the threat of humans. Creative idea with the frog Godfrey reading the future with his grandfather’s leg bones. Kai’s story about following the truffle smell into devil’s canyon and Enrico saying there are no accidents, was a touching moment. The idea that bad seeds are to blame combined with Mr. Greedy’s personality was a bit on-the-nose and simplistic. A film like Zootopia which was a bit clumsy with metaphors, did have subtlety and a surprise ending. More plot twists at the end might help this story, but overall very good.
